Chapter 18-20 summary: (Active Blog)
Aureliano spent all of his time in Melquiades room, the ghost of the Gypsy guides Aureliano to help decipher the prophecies when they are 100 years old. He figures out that they are written in Sanskrit . The Buendías then become poor, but Petra Cotes helps them out by sending food to them. Santa Sofía de la Piedad the widow of Arcadio, walks out without telling them where she is going Then Fernanda del Carpio dies to over come her bittersweet yearning for the past . Later after her death her son Arcadio the second returns to Macondo. He totally changed and having solitude. Ignorant he has not been studying anything because he was counting on inheriting lots of money. But all that was left was a old house in ruins, he left with nothing but his memories. Then he discovers Ursula's gold under her bed, and shares it with the children of the town. (oh no!) In his solitude and loneliness becomes friends with Aureliano the second who shares his knowledge with him. Then they receive a visit with the son of CAB, who is shot by the police in front of the Buendia house. (17 sons that had died, symbolized death). Then 4 children who JA celebrated at a party, kill him in his bath and steal his gold. (haha) That relationship has definitely ended.

AU returns to Macondo from Europe bringing her husband named Gaston. He followed her and realizes that her love for the town is only a dream. Macondo is declining and it's impossible to rewind and start all over. Aureliano the second remembers that the Buendias are the most recognizable family of the whole village. Then Aureliano the second falls in love with AU. He then finds a new friendship with a wise bookseller. Together they party they go to whorehouses and bars. Aureliano then sees the ancient Pilar Ternera (great-great grandmother). He also takes a lover, a black prostitute named Nigromanta. Gaston has a vision of establishing an airmail service in Latin America. Gaston so preoccupied fails to realize that Aureliano the second and AU have become lovers.

The chapter starts out with the news that Pilar Ternera died in her rocking chair. Gaston travels to continue his business plans for airmail, who learns about his wife's affair and does not return. Aureliano the second, the Catalonian and the four scholars leave Macondo. A village that is sentenced for death. The happy lovers Aurliano the second and AU still continue happily. (haha and she is still married) The Buendia house crumbles, its destroyed by the red ants that swarm everywhere. Ursula fears about incest become true AU and Aureliano the second have a son named Aureliano the third (same name again), he was born with a tail of a pig. Unfortunately AU bleed so much that she died after giving birth :(. Aurliano the second drunk seeks comfort and goes to Nigromanta, but being so ignorant he forgets the baby. When he goes back it is to late the ants were feeding on it, and that was left was the corpse. He then figures out that the Generations of the Buendias has come to an end. He then finally decipher the ancient prophecies. They were the description of the entire history of the family and the village of Macondo. He then reads a part in the text, which is where he is at that moment. He read on and around him a apocalyptic wind swirls, ripping the town from it foundation, erasing it memory and existence. (i new it was going to happen, but what a sad ending)


Reflective Blog: I am going to make this short i am really happy the book is done, and my Saturdays are free. (sorry Mrs. Blaber, no offence to you) I am sad that the book had to end that way. We all knew it was coming, the town was set up for destruction from the very beginning. And everyone has to die, but it was sad the AU died giving birth, and the baby got eaten by ants because the ignorant father forgot about his new born. Maybe the author point is every ending in life is not always happy. That is just how the world is.

Reflective Blog for Chapters 14-17:

I am really confused because I labeled my whole book with chapter’s numbers, but stupid Makella forgot one chapter, so I have always been a chapter a head somewhere in the book. If anyone read my blog thanks for leaving me a comment letting me know. I am getting bored of this book, because they have no common sense. Well Melquiades and Ursula have some, but not enough to make up for everyone else. I just get sick of how they make the same mistakes and how history repeats itself. It’s just like Things Fall Apart modernized does not work in any tribe or town. When places change drastically, it is very hard to adapt to a constant flow of new things. People end up digging a hole to big, and burring themselves. People then change not for the right reasons. They also do not things for the right reasons, this cause them to have big egos. I think that once something new is introduced, it is forever introduced. (You can not take it back). This is also a motif of the past, present and the future. Maybe if someone finds a time machine in Melquiades chamber pot room. But good luck with thatJ. This would be a good time for some magical realism. I had to force myself to read, it gave me a headache. This government has caused the town to crumble the courts, the lawyers, the petitions, the strikes, the civil wars, the banana plantation and the martial laws do not help either. A lot of people in this book are naked a lot, and a lot of people have affairs and they like to have children with people who are related to each other and there are quite a few whore archetypes. I wonder what the author message is about that. This book also has many different points of views, through the eyes of the characters. It is also interesting how the author adds Latin American culture and allusion throughout the book. I just found out that Ursula is the Protagonist meaning she is like the main character and the backbone of the whole family. The climax is the banana plantation workers go on strike and cause a massacre. I swear sometimes the author wants you to be confused, because no disrespect but he is confused himself. This I think is why he wrote the book he wants to people to see the world in not only his perspective but the characters perspectives. The archetypes that he uses are in everyday life, so that we can relate to the situations. The character obstacles, problems and perspectives are usually very similar. This is where the author grabs the reader’s attention. (I have done that, thought that, said that before).That is just how life goes no one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes. But maybe they are not as stupid as some of these people with no common sense what’s so ever! It is so interesting how Fernada got the coffins mixed up, when one is her husband. She is so indignant to the world, and she does not notice the little details in the town or in the people. (Stupid) This took my whole Friday, I am done for now. I am going to get ready for the baby bash concert. (Off topic I know it has nothing to do with OHYOS) opps!!!!

Chapter 14:

Meme's last vacation was the period of mourning for the death of CAB. A new character was introduced her name is Amaranta Ursula. Meme then got her diploma and was admired for her art. Fernanda's strictness was difficult for her she had to sacrifice a lot of things. Fernanda point of view was that her daughter instrument was a museum fossil even the nuns agreed. (Clavichord) Later her real tastes were revealed. She would go to noisy parities, learned to smoke and ended up naked measuring other friend’s body parts. (Hahaha). She finally had to courage to tell her mother that she wanted to run away from school and use it as an enema. Then Aureliano Segundo father daughter relationship began which caused misery for Fernanda and A.S characters to become sour. Meme was not beautiful, but gave a great first impression. The town continues to grow they add things like nail polish, hair curlers, toothbrushes, eye drops, cosmetics later on even cars. Fernanda true colors are starting to show she wants Meme to be deprived of love for the rest of her life. Fernanda and A.S made a promise not to take Meme to Petra cotes house. A.S and Meme relationship feel apart he wanted nothing to do with her and rarely would call her and take her to the movies. Meme also learned how to play tennis and swimming and ate pineapple and ham. (Town is really changing) Dad also bought her a 6 volume English Encyclopedia. (Interest in English). Then A.S and Meme made a promise that she would tell him about her first love affair. She started liking a lot of people and that is where the trouble began. Being very naive she’s like an American red head boy who was on vaction in Macondo, Petrica Brown and Mauricio Babilonia. She felt accomplished and she had no sign of. Then an unexpected death occurs; Amaranta's death. Fernanda cares for Jose Arcadio as a woman cares for a man instead of a grandmother for her grandchild. Fernanda wished that Rebeca would die before she did, later she died from her pleas to god. Then Amaranta signs foreshadowed her death, see felt the day coming so she announced grief and she was sharing her things with the poor (caring).Then they had a Father come to talk to her and she said that she did not need any spiritual help because she had a clean conscience. A public testimony occurred and she had asked for a mirror, surprised she saw her self aged. The silence became to darken the room. On page 128 "One minute of recognition is worth more than a whole life of friendship." Ursula torn had developed so much love for her and she taught her how to read. Ursula blind was the first to notice something was up with Meme. Sure enough Fernanda caught Meme kissing a man in the movies. She was suspicious, but she was hoping for the right moment. A.S recognized his daughter in the movies and saw her kiss him and he said sorry love and locked her up in her bedroom. Then Fernanda was introduced to a new, familiar man named Mauricio Babilonia who born and raised in Macondo. Meme knew that yellow butterflies had something to do with him, (series of events occurred) which almost caused her to to repeat what had happened to Remdious the Beauty. Fernanda said that "You can see in his face that he is going to die."At that moment Mauricio Bablonia came with a package that he said was from Patricia Brown. In the package it was notes that said meet me at the movies on Saturday. Meme convinced her father not to come. When saw a nocturnal butterfly that was the sign that M.B was there on page 288 he said "If you hadn't come, you would of never of seen me again." with his hand on her knee. She could not sleep and her appetite sank deeply into solitude. Being tricky she made a web to trick her mom. Then Meme saw Pilar Ternera (great grandmother) she told her her fortune and that she would not find love except in bed. She felt that love was on her side, Pilar then offered her bed. Meme later surrendered to Mauricio Bablonia and they had sex twice a week for three months. Fernanda surprised locked her up in her bedroom where her dad visited her and she denied everything, they relationship changed forever. Yellow butterflies would invade at dusk and Fernanda would kill them with an insecticide bomb. She then found out that her daughter and having sex, her heart froze. Pissed, not waiting for the opportune moment she invited a new mayor to lunch. She then ordered a guard that though he was busting someone for stealing hens, but found Meme naked among the scorpions and butterflies! The guard lodged a bullet in his spin and he was in bed for the rest of his life. He eventually died of old age in solitude without a moan, without a protest, without a single moment of betrayal and tormented by the yellow butterflies. He was ostracized as a chicken thief. :( (Mrs. Blaber is right she is so evil)

Chapter 15:

The first sentence of chapter 15 says that Meme Buendia son would cause the downfall of Macondo. The village has modernized more and more for an example there were names of streets, hospitals, common sense of brother-in-laws, medicine and Martial laws. Meme thought about M.B for the rest of her life until she died of old age in a gloomy hospital in Cracow. Fernanda had no contact with the outside world. She had an altercation with her husband over decided Meme’s fate. This shows A.S caring character and that he will do anything for his daughter he is willing to get the police involved. But Fernanda stated that Meme signed the paper on her own will to go to the convent, but A.S still unconvinced. Ursula living in her dark corner new she was living in dangerous times when her son Aureliano carried homeopathic pills in his pocket. She then with common sense says “It is as if the world were repeating itself.”Pg298. CAB controlled the banana company, but later workers drew up petitions. Government in Macondo clearly dose not mix, it becomes very chaotic. Strikes soon broke out, pissed off workers burned and destroyed the plantations. Then an unequal war is planned that is doomed for failure. More than 3 thousand people, workers, woman, and children come together. Then 4 machine guns aimed at the crowd cause silence. Then JAS put a kid he never meets on his shoulders so he could see what the military was saying. He heard that GCCV authorized the army to shoot them all. A captain tried to warn them said that they had five minutes to draw out. No one moved. Then one time JAS spoke up in his life, he said “Take an extra minute and stick it up your ass.”(Hahaha). A magical realism event then occurred the soldiers guns were fired, but they were filled with caps. Then panic struck everywhere. JAS later felt darkness and woke with extreme pain, and next to corpses piled like bunches of bananas, and the shadows of the soldiers with the machine guns in their hands. He then tried to convince a woman that three thousand people were dead, but she said “there has not been someone dead since your uncle.” Sofia then sneaked her son in the “chamber pot room” secretly took care of him so Fernanda would not find him. More problems with the troops occurred they were knocking on doors at night and they told everyone that “This town is a happy town”. They were able to dispose of all the union leaders except for one JAS. So in search of him, the officer went to go inspect the room in which JAS was in looking at him, he was unable to see him. Then at that moment JAS was sure the war was over but after the event he came to conclusion that CAB was a faker. He questioned why he needed so many words to describe war. He said only word was necessary was fear. Then at he discovered that the only thing he feared was being bury alive. Sofia then promised him that he would be burying dead. JAS was stuck in Melquiades room looking at the manuscripts unable to understand. The sound of rain became accustomed: it was a form of silence. The only thing that disturbed his silence was Sofia coming and going. Then stuck in the memory forever he said “There were more than 3 thousand of them”.

Chapter 16:

It has been raining for four year, eleven moths, and two days. It has not stopped since the massacre. A.S abandons his childhood from the on going rainfall, but becomes caring for his children Amaranta Ursula and Aueliano the second (that name again?). Ursula still alive but very decrypted is taken advantage of by her children. The children finally learn the stories of their ancestors. The most simplest and natural thing rain becomes very destructive and causes A.S fortune comes to a crumble, all of his animals die from the flood. Fernanda very interesting, somewhat evil character keeps in contact with her telepathic doctors. They try to heal her from a disease of the uterus and keeping herself busy causing pain to her husband. Aureliano Segundo whose tragic flaw his temper breaks everything valuable in the houses. A.S goes on a hunt to find a fortune of gold coins that Ursula hid somewhere in the backyard of the house. Rains finally end, this is where the worse is yet to come, and the town is washed away and slowing disappearing along with its people. (All that is left will be memories) (I knew it was going to happen eventually!!!)

Chapter 17:

Finally the rains have stopped, Ursula trying to make a miracle happen tries to get the house back in order. She eventually discovers JAS who has been in Melquíades room trying to decipher the ancient prophecies. Petra Cotes returned finding all of their animals dead. (Sounds like our economy crisis, we can relate). Struggling to make ends meet, they are humble and happy with the parties and falling in love with each other. A.S neglects his children (Motif: repeating history), which are aging very quickly. Aureliano the second has the same qualities of the family tall, and thin. (Motif: repeating history motif). Ursula remembers her years of solitude and eventually at 120 years old passes away. During the same time ironically Rebeca passes away too. Foreshadowing something bad is going to happen the unpredictable weather sends a heat wave to the town. The town’s people then begin that the worse is going to come, that this was a message that disease is going to stuck. (Plague)Then we are introduced to the wandering Jew that is revealed in the streets. Macondo almost destroyed in despair. A.S very poor and dying raises money to send Amaranta Ursula to go to Europe for her education. JAS after years of time and effort finally deciphers Melquíades prophecies. Almost dieing informs Aureliano the second the knowledge about the history of Macondo. Job well done he ironically dies at the same time as his twin brother JAS. JAS last words to Aureliano the second is information about the massacre of the striking workers and his terrible experience. For an interesting ending A.S and JAS coffins were mixed up, forever they were buried in the other’s grave. (Cease, cows, life is short A.S put on his coffin.)

I thought that as it was difficult to stay focus because it was following the motif of circular and linear time. In these 2 chapters you can understand more, of why he sees the world so chaotic. There were a lot of magical realism in these 2 chapters. There was Fernanda who would wander with three living ghosts one being JAB. There was hooked fish tails that made the sun come out and filled the sky with ants. There was also invisible doctor relationships. (haha) I thought it was really weird when Ursula took syrup and honey in her eyes.(what was she thinking?) Not to mean, but i thought it was funny that she was shitting on everything and she shouted "shit" (that is ironic). Amaranta thought that is was a scorpion bit her, so she asked her where it was and she pointer to her heart. (that's really sad:() The elephant ate so much i was like wow she had like 40 oranges, 8 quarts of coffee, 30 raw eggs and more. Then A.S almost died because he ate so much, i think that is funny, he let his competitiveness get to him. (maybe he did not want to lose to a girl..lol.) After reading that article in class to realized the connection to Latin American culture for an example was when Amaranta and Arcadio learned Spanish. I then realized that Aureiano Segundo got drunk and started singing Texas songs. (how did they Texas songs?) It was really sad when the only person who did not want to take part in his mothers farewell was CAB, the one with a heart said to be made of stone. (he must really care and love his mother). I also think that is it funny that Petra Copes can sleep with 2 different men and not know that there 2 different men. (i know there twins, but there has to be something different). I also thought it was funny that i forgot who but one of the characters wanted to wear leather boots that were signed by Petra Copes in his coffin. (that is a little strange). It was also really funny when the nuns saw CAB pee on the chestnut tree. It was interesting when he remember that in the middle of war he was awakened by the certainty that the person whom he had slept with was dead. (that's nice). It was also funny when Ursula diagnosed Meme and told her "Its the same thing drunk people have." Its interesting how Meme took so much money out of his pockets that he could not keep track. Then she told her father about her drunken night and he said "only if your mother knew." (haha) It was gross when one of the men removed wax out of there ears with a penknife. It was also interesting when he counted the fish in the pail and there were 17, he did not sell any. Also for Meme how her instrument made half the town fall asleep.(i feel bad, but maybe it can be seen as a gift). I thought it was so sweet when Amaranta thought she was going to die that she gave her things to the poor. (very thoughtful of her). Macondo with its on going growth had days of the mounth and days of the week. (i was surprised, what is next?). Its funny how Fernanda tried to help the nuns bathroom situation by bringing 72 pots to go in. But it kind of made it worse and she ended up putting them in the "spiritual life room." (haha). It was also interesting to me how (forgot who) saw his drawers as "goth drawers." (lol). Last thing i also thought it was funny how the Elephant had a beautiful face hand and an irresistible charm. (ironic) When he saw her enter he commended in a low voice that he would rather tourney in bed and not at the table. (haha that must of been embarrassing for him)

Chapter 12:
Chapter 12 stars out with an overview of Ursula's bewilderment of her 100 years of solitude.She resisted growing old, feared being useless and was shamed of admitting defeat. Also for a long period of time towards the end of her life she was blind but no one in her family noticed and sometimes she even forgot. An truly amazing woman was still able to sew, find Fernanda's lost wedding ring, and could also tell the colors of the Saints clothes by the texture. Blind she still had common sense to noticed that her family had repeated the same path, same actions and words everyday. She then realized that her son CAB never lost the love for her family, he never had it. CAB was a man of sinful pride and incapable love. When she was carrying him in her belly she heard him weep, she tough of the worse. She begged god that if he had a pigtail that he would die in the womb. But her husband JAB thought that he would aspire to be a ventriloquist or a prophet. Amaranta's heart frightened and it became clear that her actions were the struggle between a measureless love and cowardice. Rebeca earth of the land did not carry the blood in her veins but the unknown blood of the strangers whose bones were still clocing in their grave. (Page 251)Pilar Ternera almost 100 agile and fat and described as more keen than the cards. Then Remdious flew to heaven. Fernanda imposed her rules changing the traditional senses. Being the victim of discrimination she told JAS"He won't ever come into this house again" and "As long as he carries the rash of the foreigners."Aureliano Segundo felt more comfortable with Petro Cotes more than his wife. Then when Fernanda found Petra Cotes in his bed she threw 2 trunk of clothes in the street to embarrass him. Petra Cotes would sleep with both brothers and she thought that god had given her the good fortune of a man who could make love like two. (ironic there are two). The new edition of Macondo the train imported champagne and brandy. Which Aureliano Segundo got drunk and had a party. During the parties they would slaughter animals and eat them. Aurelian Segundo ate so much he became fat and later was introduced to his competition Camila Sagastume or also known as "the Elephant". The elephant had good manners and a big appetite Aurelian Segundo's ideal woman. She had the reputation of a bone crusher because her theory was to eat until overcame by fatigue. She left her home and her family to compete. Aurelian soon figured out her method and she asked for a tie and he refused. His stupid move costed him to eat so much he fell face down unconscious. Then they threw him an abyss and then he saw the fall of death and asked to be taken to Fernanda. But survived and became husband of his concubine and lover of his wife. Then Ursula discovered that CAB's heart was made of stone. Amaranta tall and proud carried the cross of ashes of virginity on her forehead. She weaved during the day and unwove at night. Meme was unlike them all and Fernanda was worried about her. Ursula also sore that during his childhood his twin brother changed places and the other should be called Aureliano. On page 262 "He was like a wandering star in Ursula's planetary system." JAS was in reality not a member of the family, he was very harsh he would lock himself in himself. Then he went to go urinate outside and he saw the ghost of his father. (Magical Realism). Towards the end he came to conclusion that he had been dreaming the same dream for a while, feared that it would be lost. CAB saw the circus and he saw the miserable face of solitude. He could not remember his dream stuck his head between his shoulders and remained motionless. Then Santa Sfia de la Piedad went to throw out the trash and saw him dead along with descending vultures.

Chapter 7 Summary:

Amaranta and Aureliano Jose had a very interesting childhood story. They would bathe each other and it said that they were yoked together. Later they almost went too far, but the motif of ignorance enters because he does not know that it is his aunt until later. But then he asked can a person marry his aunt? A solider replied we are fighting in war because a priest wants to marry his mom. But this man’s love does not give it a rest he offers to go to Rome for the papers but Amaranta says that our children will be born with a tail of a pig (allusion to JAB and Ursula’s story). Confused Amaranta barred the door of her bedroom forever. Later he two lost all interest in each other. In this chapter we are introduced to General Jose Raquel Moncada: the mayor and an Antimilitarist. His most feared adversary was CAB, but later he taught him how to play chess. Then Father Nicanor is sick with a high fever so he is replaced with Father Coronel a war veteran. Bruni Crespi married got Amparo Moscote and there store prospered and they were able to built a theater. The school was also rebuilt and an old teacher named Don Melchor Escalona took over. Then the identical twins of Santa Sofia De La Pledid are also introduced. (Aureliano Segundo and Jose Arcadio Segundo). Somewhere in this chapter CAB came back with 9 more sons, Ursula baptized all of them and then he asked for the mechanical ballerina (Pietro Crispi. Then Arcadio finally out that Pilar Ternerna is his mother. (Motif: ignorance) Pilar Ternera with lost hope and unhappy she read that Arcadio should not go out tonight. But disobeying her, went to the theaters, this foreshadows something bad is going to happen. Which indeed it did!

Chapter 8 Summary:

This chapter starts out with something new in the village a telegraphic conversation. Then more new things came in like rain, lawyers, holidays and receipts. (As time goes on the village of Macondo keeps on expanding) Amaranta raised Remedious the beauty but convinced that thinking about killing Rebeca that her soul was reborn she banished her from the sewing room. (Significant, I don’t remember it ever raining). Then we are introduced to man named General Teofilo Vargas; full Indian. But CAB said he was a beast worth watching. Later on the command of CAB he was cut up by machetes in an ambush. Then politics change now all there fighting for is power CAB smiling. (Alludes to dictators that let power get to them) But then GM says that is betrayal and later for is accused of high treason and condemned to death. Ursula wearing black warns him that if you kill him ill kill you with my own hands. On page 169 “It’s the same as if you have been born with a pig’s tail”. Having thought about it, he decides to help escape and asks him for a favor; help me end this shitty war. After 22 years he comes back and he does not remember anything; he was like a total stranger. Then Ursula see’s him and says that if it is not war then it must be death. She had a premonition. (Magical Realism). Later having war get to him, he tries to get rid of the memories and buries his weapons like his father buried the spear that killed Prudencio. Then he asked where his heart was and his doctor and he put an iodine circle where his heart was. Then CAB tried to commit suicide, he shot the pistol right where the iodine spot was. The physicians plan worked the spot that he marked was the only spot that would not hit a vital organ. He was able to take it out from his back and having been made a fool of he was alive. Lastly the chapter ended with Ursula asking one of the guards for their service, she feed them, and taught them how to read and write. The young commander was service for her for many years. But later on New Years Ursula found the young commander under her window. DEAD!

Chapter 9 Summary:

Aureliano Segundo on his death bed wishes to name his child Jose Arcadio. The twins were like ying and yang. For an example when one of the twins took a sip of lemonade the other twin said that it needed more sugar and sure enough they forgot to put the sugar in. They were identical on the outside, but two total different people on the inside. Then reading one of Melquiades books trying to decode it, he feels someone watching him and sure enough Melquiades is watching him. (Magical Realism). They shared secrets and one day Ursula walked in when he was there and she asked who are you talking to? She then said your great grandfather spoke to himself too. (haha). One twin became a cockfighting name the other was a well respect accordion player. AS meet a girl and, thinking that he his brother played along with it and never cleared it up. (That is a nice brother)Then we are introduced to Petra Cotes. Ursula 100 years old, aged and been through a lot. As time went on AS fell in love with Remidous the beauty (a creature not of there world and sovereign ruler of the festival) the chapter ended with a carnival that turned into a massacre. The festival turned into a disaster some people died and wounded. The twins were able to save the Queen of Madagascar (Fernanda del Caripo). Later Aurelian Segundo married Fernanda del Caripo in Macondo.

Chapter 10 Summary:

A. Segundo gains the passion to solve Melquides mysteries preserved in his laboratory. J.A. Segundo and A. Segundo look the same until they are fully grown; the only thing that they really resemble as adults is they both sleep with Petra Cotes. She does not realize they are not the same men. (How could you not?) J.A.S. becomes very wealthy and from there’s animals livestock fertility. (Magical realism). Showing off and sharing his wealth he throws parties. A.S. becomes wealthy due to this. J.A.S. tries to create a navigable river passage from the river to the ocean; unfortunately he is only successful once bringing a boat ashore. Remedios the Beauty (still ignorant) becomes queen of the carnival when Fernanda del Caprio arrives.

Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven:

Chapter starts out with the story of Fernanda del Carpio history. A.S. being obsessive over her takes her home to marry her and then they end up sharing a life together. He Fernanda has two children from A.S. they name them Renata Remedios and Jose Arcardio. Then a new idea comes to the town of Macondo; pope. CAB sons return and receive an ash cross on their foreheads (symbol) which does not wash off and remains on them for the rest of their life. This is an allusion to the bible because of the cross and the holes in Jesus’ hands and a symbol to Aurelianos seventeen sons. Aureliano Centeno builds an ice factory in Mancondo, Aureliano Triste builds a railroad. (New things added to the village) This links them to a whole new world.

In the book One Hundred Years of Soildtude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez chapters 7-11 are very intense. (5 chapters! A lot of work) I spent all Saturday reading, annotating, typing, and blogging. Thanks Mrs. Blaber for extending the due date to Sunday 11:59. I again feel really bad for Ursula especially now that she is old. (100 years of ageJ) As I read more I notice more magical realism. But like Mrs. Blaber said we read Metamorphosis and that was Magical Realism, we just did not know it. (He was a bug!!!) I think it is interesting how ignorance is anyone’s life is so essential. It’s made me realize how important knowledge is, maybe that is why we go to school everyday. As time goes on the village of Macondo become a town or city. In every chapter there are characters that bring something good or bad, new or useful to the village. As I said all of the other times this book is so confusing ill be reading and about them getting married and then it will talk about the story of how they meet. In the book there are a lot of cold hearted people which goes to show that, the whole world is definitely not all peaceful. There are customs and religions that follow different beliefs and rules that is why I think civilization is not always good to have. For and example in Things Fall Apart when they brought Christianity is caused lots of problems and changes the person. (Same deal). I went through so many post-it notes to annotate but it helps so much because if you don’t, then it’s almost like to you have to read the book twice. I think that not only is this book like a soap opera, it reminds me of sex and the city or like desperate house wives. (lol)I have to admit I am kind of getting bored of the book, but I hope I can regain my interest. Oh yea and again with the long names, do you know how many times I have to press ignore???...hahaha

Chapter 3 Summary:
The village begins to alternate from Ursula's new ideas of civilization for an example the town of Macondo gets a new house/ mansion remodel. Then we are introduced to two new characters in chapter 3 a man named Pietro Crespi who is handsome and a well mannered boy that teaches the girls how to dance, and Don Apolinar Moscote a benevolent ruler. Jose Arcadio Buendia then believes in god’s nonexistence and stops pursuing him. Ursula had set up a party/ ball that all of the family members, close friends, and founders of Macondo danced. Then Remedios and Aureliano fell in love with each other but when Remedios went to the galleries of single woman and thought all about Remedios but then Pilar Ternera showed up at his feet. Then Pilar Ternera new that there was someone else and asked him "who is it". Then Pilar Ternera promised him that she was going to talk to the girl. Keeping her promise she read Remedios card and it read "you will not be happy as long your parents remain unburied”. Then she told Aurelinao that he would be good in the war. Later on Aureliah and Remedios end up getting engaged. But jealous Amaranta told her sister over her dead body and later threatened her that she would kill her. Then a few months later Jose Arcadio Buendia swears that Melquiades is immortal, but after he finally passes he is the first burial in the village of Mocando. It is to be said that the town was unknown to the dead until Melquiades. Jose Arcadio Buendia grieving about Melquaides and Prudencio Aguliar sees Prudencio Aguliar ghost again. (Magical realism). Jose Arcadio Buendia going crazy had to have 30 men to rope his feet, hands, and waist, then put him outside with a shelter of palm branches. Then he is neglected. (He neglected his children, so how does it feel?) Lastly something strange is happening the days are not changing, it's Monday everyday.
Chapter 4 summary:
Chapter 4 begins with Aureliano Bruendia and Remedious getting married on Sunday in March. Ursula arranged her wedding to be celebrated on the same day. Then on Friday Pietro Crespi received terrible news that his mother passed away. (Euphemism). Then another new character is introduced his name is Father Nicanor Reyna he is a old man from the swamp with sad skin, expression of a old angle and a round stomach. He is a very strong believer in god but no one paid attention to him in the village, but some were curious and some were insulted. He decides to build the first church in Macondo he begged and pleaded so much he lost his voice. (Alludes to history and how missionaries tried to convert people to Christianity)(Very passionate man). Father Nicanor tried to convince Jose Arcadio Buendia to have faith in Jesus but still dissatisfied he played tricks on him and was rude to him. Then one day Father Nicanor showed Jose Arcadio Buendia levitation but he was not convinced. So one day Jose Arcadio Buendia speaks Latin and no one else understood him except for Father Nicanor. He asked him why am I tied up here and he said” Because you are crazy. From then on Father Nicanor kept a distance. Rebeca excited because her wedding will be the first wedding in the church (inauguration). But having to wait 3 years she was questioning. Then her sister told her "In that case I wont have to kill you for 3 years" on page 84. (That is a great sister). Rebeca impatient to wait asked Pietro Crespi if he wanted to elope but he refused and instead gave Father Nicanor money to finish the church. Amaranta trying to do anything to stop the wedding ruined her dress and planned to poison her. The Remedios woke up in the middle of the night with pain and 3 days later ended up dieing from poison from her own blood. Amaranta then felt very guilty(her crisis of conscience) for Remedios death and prayed to god that she would not poison Rebeca. Later the son of Aureliano and Pilar Ternera was born, baptized and named Aureliano Jose. Then Arcadio who had a copious amount of enthusiasm for education like his father wanted to build schools. So on the day of National Independence he painted houses blue. Meanwhile Father Nicanor left and then returned with 8 policemen, there were armed men in town. Then Remedios announced she was going to have a child, Ursula disappointed prohibited talking for a year. Then Amaranta adopted Aureliano Jose who would share her solitude. Still in love after her death it said that in order for them to kiss they had to be abandoned to the free will of death. Rebeca being the interesting character she is began eating the earth. Then Jose Arcadio Buendia felt an earthquake that no one else felt. (This foreshadows something was coming). Sure enough a large scary man arrives to Macondo, to find out that it is Jose Arcadio. Coming back from his gypsy hunt he was a total new man changed from civilization he wanted liquor and told them to put it on his tab. He also wanted to Indian wrestle and gamble. Tattoos covered his whole body. Telling his stories of how he had been around the world 65 times and enlisted a crew of sailors. Ursula a sensitive mother wept because her son did not keep in touch with her. Then Rebeca started to fall in love with her so called brother. Three days later they were married and Pietro Crespi said that is was "against nature and against the law" but he replied "Fuck nature two times over. Pg 92 Pietro began to cry but Jose simply replied "If you really like our family, there’s Amaranta for you". Then Father Nicanor later announced that Rebeca and Jose Arcadio are not brother and sister. Ursula continued to be discussed and did not let them set foot in the house. Pietro Crespi always a gentlemen still respected the family. As time went on Pietro Crespi and Amaranta started to fall in love and as expected he asked her to marry him and she said “Of course". Then Don Apolinar Moscote brought something new and civilized a ballot box. (He added politics and government to the village)Then came along a doctor named Dr. Noguera, they tested him and made fun of him and later tied him to a tree and shot him and used the excuse due to the process of law. They got away with many cruel things they also killed Father Nicanor. Then the whole village heard more awful news Ursula said “War broken out". The new leader of the town said "Get the boys ready were going to war" because the majority of the ballots suggested that men should go to war. Men under the age, armed with knives and sharpened tools got ready for war. (That is convincing) Then Arcadio was named civil and military leader of the town and from then on he preferred to be called Colonel Aureliano Buendia.

Chapter 5 Summary:

Colonel Aurelian Buendia organized 32 armed uprising; he had 17 male children with 17 different women. The woman was all exterminated the night before the oldest son had reached 35. He went through unbelievable things for an example he lived through poison, and shot himself in the chest and survived. (Magical Realism). He became famous streets were named after him and later he died of old age. But for some reason he never took any photos. He always said that “We leave it to you in good shape; try to have it better when we come back”. The Arcadio invented uniforms to structure the village and the army; he also printed one of Melquiades books. Arcadio ruler imposed military service for men over 18, had overage men wear armbands, and had people shot for disrespect. He was the cruelest ruler Macondo ever had; Ursula called his own son a “murder”. The own son wanted to shot her and she said “I dare you to, bastard” “Son of a evil mother that way I don’t have to weep for the shame of having raiser a monster on Pg 105. Ursula then became the ruler and turned the village back around. She did what she could to make the village better but inside she was lonely to the useless company of her husband. Jose Arcadio Buendia was aging he had fake teeth, deaf; talking to him was like talking to a dead person. He never left his chair and Ursula lied to him about the children to make him happy. Then the story of Amaranta twilight engagement to Pietro Crespi was told. Then his brother Bruno Crespi was in charge of his music shop. Then Pietro Crespi told Amaranta that we will be married in a month and she replied “I would not marry you if you were dead”. With a broken heart Pietro Crespi tried to re kindle there love but everything that he sent her got sent back not opened. So devastated his brother found him wrists cut by a razor and his hand thrust into a basin of benzoin. Ursula being the caring person that she is decided to go against Father Nicanor and bury him next to Melqiades grave. Amaraura feeling guilty for the death of Pietro Crespi went into the kitchen and put her hands in the coal of the stove until it hurt so much that she felt no more pain and she could smell her burning flesh.(interesting cure for remorse) She wore that black gauze until her death. (Emo; commits suicide). Ursula then abandons Amaraura. Then Ursula said that she lost Arcadio from the beginning; she had raised Rebeca. Then Arcadio questioned by someone but surprising does not shoot him, he agrees that he does not deserve his last name. Then something twisted occurs Arcadio and his mother Pilar Ternera had a daughter. Then Arcadio paid a visit to Jose Arcadio and Rebeca’s neat house. They then realized that he was not there just for soup his motive was someone filed a complaint. They owned one of the best plots of land around and Arcadio wanted to legalize the title under the condition of the government can collect contributions. They had an agreement but unfortunately for Jose Arcadio he tricked him instead that land was in his name, including the cemetery and he collected fees from the people. (Profits) Ursula then found out and told him that he is a shame of the family for using public funds. Then something unexpected happened Ursula found out that he had a six-month-old daughter named Santa Sofia de la Piedad and that he was living outside his married, pregnant again. Then a new suspicious character is introduced in chapter five his name is Colonel Gregorio Stevenson he being wiped out told them that we should surrender the town without resistance. (They were fighting the opponents and they recognized him) They made him a prisoner because they did not believe that he was on their side. Ursula being stubborn Arcadio had to persuade her to surrender the house. Not one of his men survived. It ended with Arcadio thinking about the people he loved he hated the most. On Pg 119 “Tell my wife…………………………………..

Chapter 6:

Colonel Aureliano Buendia leaves Macondo to join the revolution, leaving Arcadio in charge. At first Arcadio becomes a dictator. Then Arcadio tries to have sex with his mother. To stop those urges he is acquainted with a very quiet woman named Santa Sofia de la Piedad and they start a life togther. They had three children Remedios, Aurelian Segundo and Jose Arcadio Segundo. Then the soaps happen again Jose Arcadio arrives and had the courage to as Rebeca’s hand in marriage. Then Pietro decides to propose to Amaranta and she flat out rejects him.

As I get more and more into this book all the generations get more and more confusing. It like putting a puzzle piece together who had who? who likes who?, who did who?. This book to me is like an on going soap opera.(so many love triangles) I also feel bad for Ursula because she gone thought so many things in life, she is always weeping and always disappointed in her children. Pilar Ternera is the hoe archetype and I think that overall she means well. I also think it is really irritating how all of sudden someone will die and then if you continue on it flashback a story. (You are thinking the whole time wait I thought she was dead). I think it is weird how when everyone feels stressed or some kind of bad emotion they get a fever. I also think it is funny how they alcoholic beverage is fermented cane juice JI also think is really weird how Rebeca eats the earth huh? I also can’t believe that there own blood would want to kill each other over a man. There s a lot of backstabbing, there is just so much going on. Also I am kind out grossed out with all this inbreeding; cousins marrying cousins ect. I also thought it was funny that in the JAB the inventor wanted to build a machine that could make people fly. (Later he knew he could not; no wonder they thought he was crazy). Remedios is very nice and caring during her wedding she was the only one that paid any attention to JAB (she gave him cake). When JAB was tied up for acting crazy in a way I thought he deserved it because he was getting a taste of his own medicine. I am sad that Pietro Crespi committed suicide because of girl, he had a nice life. I wish he would have ended it peacefully.
